Paul Calleja is the Director of the Cambridge Open Zettascale Lab and of Research Computing Services at the University of Cambridge.

Dr Calleja obtained his Ph.D. in computational bio-physics at the University of Bath. After obtaining a post-doctoral research position at Birkbeck, University of London, he moved into private industry, where he spearheaded the early commercialisation of High Performance Computing cluster solutions in the UK.

Following six years in the commercial sector – during which time he led the market transition from proprietary SMP systems to commodity cluster-based solutions – Dr. Calleja returned to academia. At Imperial College London, Dr Calleja led the formation of a new HPC service, before moving in 2006 to the University of Cambridge to direct a major reorganisation of research computing services. This has resulted in University-wide HPC capabilities using a novel pay-per-use cloud computing model. The University of Cambridge is now home to the fastest academic supercomputer in the UK.

Dr Calleja sits on numerous national and international HPC committees and advisory boards, as well as being a founding member of the UK HPC Special Interest Group.

Cassie Bradley has primary responsibility for overseeing the successful delivery of the Cambridge Open Zettascale Lab’s portfolio of themes and projects. She works with key stakeholders in the academic community and industry to ensure the vision of the COZL.

Cassie is a project, programme and portfolio management professional who has worked within University Information Services at the University of Cambridge for six years. She has managed large-scale complex programmes on cyber security and infrastructure. In recent years, she role has been Portfolio Manager, managing delivery teams and taking responsiblity for governance and strategic alignment.

Steve Smith is Founder and Director of Business and Technical Services Ltd and a Senior Advisor to the Cambridge Open Zettascale Lab.

Steve has been in the IT industry for over forty years. Twenty of those were spent at Dell Technologies building the High Performance Computing business across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. He now focuses on business management and development activities for COZL.

Christopher Edsall is the Head of Research Software Engineering at Research Computing Services and a Principal Zettascale Software Engineer in the Zettascale Lab. He leads the team of research software engineers and HPC consultants with the goal of better software enabling better research. He is a co-director of the recently formed Institute of Computing for Climate Science.

Christopher studied physics at the University of Canterbury and then worked in several research institutions in New Zealand (NIWA) and the UK (National Oceanography Centre and the University of Bristol) administering thier HPC systems and upskilling researchers in software engineering to make best use of the supercomputing facilities.

Kacper Kornet is a Research Software Engineer at Research Computing Services, University of Cambridge and in the Cambridge Open Zettascale Lab.

Joshua Reed is a Research Software Engineer in the Cambridge Open Zettascale Lab. After graduating with a Masters in Physics from the University of Nottingham, Joshua worked for start-up specialising in the extraction of value from metadata. The company collaborated with many public organisations, including the ONS, NHSx and the University of Nottingham. In his role, Joshua was the architect and implementer of ‘proof of concept’ solutions for research and development projects in data science, data engineering and web development.

As an Zettascale Systems Engineer, Joshua is working on designing and implementing a scalable observability platform, alongside a performance and regression testing suite for the data centre and HPC cluster.

Dominic Friend is a Senior Systems Engineer in the Cambridge Open Zettascale Lab.

Dominic studied Computer Science at the University of York. After graduation he took up a post within the Department of Computer Science, supporting both teaching and research. It was at this time he discovered his passion for High Performance Computing. Dominic joined Research Computing Services at the University of Cambridge in 2017 in order to help build and administer the current generation of services.

He recently completed a two year Masters degree apprenticeship in Data Analytics. This was jointly provided by Anglia Ruskin University and Cambridge Spark. Dominic is very much looking forward to applying his skills and experience to the activities of the Zettascale Lab.

Arejn Tamerus is a Research Software Engineer at Research Computing Services, University of Cambridge and in the Cambridge Open Zettascale Lab.

Adelais Mills supports research at the Cambridge Open Zettascale Lab and the dissemination of knowledge and skills among key stakeholders, including academics at the University of Cambridge, national and international research groups and industrial partners. She works closely with the team to develop successful strategies for research and training activities, as well as to communicate the COZL’s mission to the wider world.

Adelais has a background in academia and has held positions in teaching, research and development. She received her doctorate in English Literature from University College London. She is a graduate of Pembroke College, Cambridge and St. John’s College, Oxford.
